Leadership for Every New American
At the Academy for New Americans, leadership is not reserved for a select few — it lives within every student. The Leader in Me, adapted from Dr. Stephen R. Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, is the framework through which we honor that belief.
For a community of newly arrived immigrants and multilingual learners, the 7 Habits offer a common language of growth that transcends any single native tongue — and they connect directly to our school's own values of G.R.A.C.E.
"Leadership is communicating to people their worth and potential so clearly that they are inspired to see it in themselves."— Dr. Stephen R. Covey
How This Looks at I.S. 235
Leadership at our school is woven into everyday life. Students maintain personal leadership notebooks, take on meaningful classroom roles, and lead conferences where they present their academic progress to their families. The habits are reinforced through monthly themes, student-led initiatives, and a culture where every contribution is valued.
Because our families speak many languages, leadership materials and family communications are provided multilingually — ensuring every parent and guardian can participate fully in their child's growth as a leader.
